Bengal Florican

Bengal Florican Houbaropsis bengalensis, a grassland habitat specialist listed by IUCN as Critically Endangered, is mainly found in Dudhwa, Kishanpur and Pilibhit reserves in Uttar Pradesh; Manas, Orang and Kaziranga reserves in Assam and D’Ering Sanctuary in Arunachal Pradesh. BNHS Satellite transmitter studies at Pilibhit and Dudhwa have provided useful information about its movement from breeding to post-breeding locations, also covering non-protected areas.

One study which concluded in 2017 has helped to identify the threats and formulate a conservation plan, besides highlighting the need to tag male and female Bengal Florican in greater numbers to fully understand their landscape-level ecological requirements. Further studies on the species is now being carried out under the BNHS Climate Change Programme.
