Threatened Birds of India - Their Conservation Requirements

BNHS is all set to release its new book “Threatened Birds of India - Their Conservation Requirements” by its Director, Dr Asad R Rahmani. The book, which is a comprehensive reference book on birds in India, will be released by Smt Jayanthi Natarajan, Minister of State for Environment and Forests, Government of India, on 22nd May 2012 in New Delhi. This will be followed by a launch in Mumbai on 24th May 2012 at the hands of Mr Satish Pradhan, Head of Group Human Resources, Tata Sons.

BNHS Governing Council changes

BNHS decides to withdraw from petition against the Forests Rights Act

BNHS, along with 3 other organizations, had filed a petition in the Supreme Court against the Scheduled Tribes and Other Traditional Forest Dwellers (Recognition of Forest Rights) Act 2006 (FRA). BNHS has decided to withdraw its name from this petition and has filed an application before the Supreme Court to this effect. This has no prejudice to the course of action that other petitioners would like to take.

New Coffee Table Book

After four successful and highly popular Coffee Table Books, we have launched the fifth in the series – “Wild Life of the Himalayas and the Terai Region”, edited by Dr Ashok S. Kothari  and Dr Boman F. Chhapgar. This is a collector’s item with rare old paintings and photos of wildlife and interesting articles from the British period on the rich wildlife of the Himalayan region. The book was released in New Delhi on 28th March 2012 and in Mumbai on 29th March 2012. The 215-page book with 70 full size plates and many smaller pictures is priced at Rs 1,250/- only. Citizen Sparrow initiative

House Sparrows -- who can resist these chirpy, cheerful and charming birds? Sparrows are found all over the world, almost everywhere that humans live. But strangely, sparrow populations have been in decline in many parts of the world, for reasons that are still unclear, although hotly debated! In India, sparrows used to be found in great abundance in all our cities, towns, villages; but sadly not any more.

Where are sparrows still found in India? Where were they found before? In which places have they declined the most? The answers to these questions are crucial if we are to discover what ails them, and how to bring them back.
