Asian Waterbird Census (AWC) 2026 – Call for Participation
BNHS invites its members to take part in the Asian Waterbird Census (AWC) 2026, an established international citizen science initiative that monitors the distribution and status of waterbirds and wetlands across Asia. Conducted annually in January, the census generates vital data that contributes to wetland conservation and supports informed management and policy decisions.
Participants will be assigned to small teams to survey select wetland sites (listed below). The exercise involves identifying and counting waterbird species while gaining practical exposure to wetland ecology, standard survey protocols, and the value of long-term monitoring. The activity is suitable for experienced birdwatchers as well as motivated beginners with a keen interest in wetland birds.
Requirements:
1. A good pair of binoculars
2. Basic knowledge of wetland bird identification
3. An active eBird account with familiarity in using the app

• Bhandup Pumping Station, Bhandup
• TS Chankaya Pond, Nerul, Navi Mumbai
• NRI Pond, Navi Mumbai
• DPS Lake Seawoods, Navi Mumbai

Important Notes:
• Participation is subject to availability; not all registrants may be accommodated.
• BNHS members will be given priority; members are requested to renew their membership if it has expired.
• Participants must report directly to their allotted transect meeting points; transport will not be provided. Please refer to the details below for meeting locations.
• As this is a survey exercise and not a guided nature trail, children below 10 years of age are not permitted to participate.
